What is a MIAM?
Mediation Information & Assessment Meeting
The MIAM gives you an opportunity to find out what mediation is about. You can find out if it is suitable for you and your circumstances. In the MIAM you will look at the issues you have to consider achieving, such as child arrangements, divorce and / or separation.
Before applying to court for a decision on finances or parenting, it is compulsory for most people to attend a MIAM with an accredited mediator.
The first meeting with a mediator is often called a Mediation Information & Assessment Meeting or MIAM. Whether it’s called a MIAM or a first meeting, it will cover the same things.
The MIAM will last about an hour and will give you an opportunity to tell our mediator about your situation, and the issues that need to be decided. The mediator will tell you about the mediation process and other options for reaching agreements.
At the end of the meeting, the mediator will tell you whether your case is suitable for mediation, and you can decide whether you want to proceed with mediation or explore another option for resolving issues. The mediator can also give you information about other services which provide help and support.
A MIAM costs £130 Inc VAT per person. The cost of the MIAM certificate should you decide that Mediation is not suitable, or mediation has failed, and you wish to issue court proceedings is £50 Inc VAT. The certificate is legally required before you can apply to court and can only be signed by one of our accredited Mediators.
We are currently not undertaking any legal aid work but can work with the Government Voucher Scheme – Family Mediation Voucher Scheme – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
What is the cost of Mediation?
At Clear View Mediation we offer a range of packages to suit all needs. The financial starting point is £130 Inc VAT per hour, per person, per Joint mediation session. Our full range of packages will be explained during your free 20 minutes consultation
You should also consider the emotional cost benefit of the Mediation process. The safe, calm setting which is managed by the trained mediator can create conversations between the parties that simply cannot be achieved through solicitors in formal communications.
The cost of your wellbeing is key to your long-term health and successful outcome on your separation journey.
Do I have to sit in a room with my Ex? I’ve heard about shuttle mediation!
Shuttle mediation is a form of mediation where the two parties in dispute are placed in different rooms and the mediator ‘shuttles’ between them, to try to help them reach an agreement. The shuttle method is useful in situations where the parties involved have a difficult time being in the same room as each other for various reasons.
The mediator can also suggest shuttle mediation if they believe that it would assist the process for the clients in order to achieve an outcome that the clients feel are appropriate.
